ARC Historical Series, 1981 Bill Elliott #9 (Mell-Gear) Ford Thunderbird. In 1981, Bill Elliott entered his sixth season on the NASCAR Cup Series driving the #9 Ford for his family-owned race team. With financial backing from Harry Melling, Elliott piloted the #9 Mell-Gear Ford Thunderbird for 13 races that season. In April 1981, Elliott earned his first career NASCAR Cup Series pole position with a 153.896 mph qualifying run at Darlington Raceway.
